PRAGUE TOURS OF THE BEATEN PATH

LITTLE LANES, HIDDEN CORNERS, GARDENS
INTERIOUR TOURS

For Prague lovers, I offer several different non-traditional tours – we´ll still stay in the city center but rather off the beaten path. And since you are a Prague lover, you know that the streets are winding, the views are breathtaking and the temples are monumental, so I only describe the suggested routes and I believe you can imagine what to expect. Itineraries can be combined of course, the longest program I´ve ever prepared was for 5 full-day tours and we did not leave the borders of Prague in that time.

Hidden corners of Hradčany and Little Quarter (Malá Strana), approx. 3 hours

Strahov Monastery – viewing point – Loreta Square – Nový Svět – Hradčanské Square – Nerudova – Jánský vršek – Kampa – Church of the Infant Jesus of Prague. On this tour, even the people of Prague admit “yeah, I’m here for the first time!”
No entrance fees

Gardens of Little Quarter (Malá Strana) and Prague Castle: approx. 3 hours, accessible only in summer (April – October)

Royal Garden – Southern Gardens of Prague Castle (Rajská and Na Valech) – Valdštejnská Garden – Palace Gardens under Prague Castle (complex of Velká and Malá Pálffyovská, Ledeburská, Kolovratská and Fürstenberská gardens), Vrtbovská Garden.
Entrance fee: 160 CZK Palace gardens, 150 CZK Vrtbovská garden.

Vyšehrad: 2 hours

Vyšehrad – ramparts, views, rotunda, church, cemetery + casemates (underground passages and a hall where the original statues from the Charles Bridge are kept
Entrance fee 190 CZK / person for casemates, or 130 CZK / person for Church of St. Peter and Paul

Hidden streets of the Old Town: approx. 3 hours

St. Agnes Monastery – surroundings of St. Agnes Monastery (Stínadla, Řásnovka) – Ungelt – passages around Old Town Square – Klementinum – surroundings of Betlemské Square.
No entrance fee.

20th century history tour: 3 hours

We will walk through the New and partly the Old Town, but mainly we will talk about the modern history of Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, from the foundation and period of the First Republic, the Second World War, the communist coup and life under the previous regime to the Velvet Revolution and an outline of current developments. For illustration, I have prepared many period picture materials.
We will visit the crypt of the church of St. Cyril and Methodius (Operation Anthropoid and the assassination of Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich). It is also possible to arrange a tour of the atomic shelter under the Jalta Hotel or the Petschek Palace, which used to be the headquarters of the Gestapo and now houses an exhibition about the Nazi occupation (both places have quite limited opening hours, and can be booked privately for larger groups).

Tour of the interiors of the Prague Castle: 3 hours

Route: St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace with the Vladislav Hall and a replica of the crown jewels, the Basilica of St. George and, of course, Golden Lane, including the torture chamber in Daliborka Tower. We will also have a look at the exteriors – the courtyards and the gardens in the summer.
Entrance fee 450 CZK / adult or 300 CZK for children, students and seniors, not included in the price.

Jewish Museum: 4 hours

Route: The Old Jewish Cemetery (it’s not the interior, I know…), the Old Synagogue (the oldest active synagogue in Europe) and the Jewish Museum’s exposition in four synagogues: history from the Middle Ages to the 19th century in the Maisel Synagogue, the Holocaust Memorial in the Pinkas Synagogue, Jewish traditions and holidays in the Klaus Synagogue and modern history in the Spanish Synagogue. The last exhibition is in the Ceremonial Hall, all parts are a maximum of 5 minutes’ walk from each other. History of Jews in the Czech lands, customs and traditions.
Entrance fee 550 CZK for adults, 400 CZK for children or students.

Karlovo náměstí and Upper New Town: 2 hours

Route: Karlovo Square – Malá Štěpánská – church of St. Stephen and the rotunda of St. Longin – Church of St. Catherine and Kateřinky park – church of St. Apolinair – Maternity hospital at Apolinar – villa America – Karlov – Ztracená varta and Ztracenka garden – Albertov.
No entrance fee.
Another of the routes where even native Praguers can discover something new. And the only one where I guarantee that we won’t meet a single tourist!

Wenceslas Square and Lower New Town: 2 hours

Route: Wenceslas Square and its passages – the historic building of the Main Railway Station – the Jerusalem Synagogue – the Church of St. Henry (Jindřich) and Jindřišská Tower – Náměstí Republiky – Legiobanka – Church of St. Peter – church of St. Kliment – Novomlýnská water tower.
No entrance fees

Tour of the Strahov Library: 1 hour

(should be combined with other tours)

The Strahov Library has two magnificent baroque halls and in total owns more than 200,000 books – they exhibit facsimiles of the most precious books (including the Strahov Evangeliar from the 9th century). We will see the cabinet of curiosities, which was actually the predecessor of today’s museums.
The tour lasts about an hour, I recommend adding it to the overall tour of Castle District (Hradčany) and Little Quarter (Malá Strana) or to combine it with the approx. one-hour tour of Loreto Church if you want to stay inside.

Tour of Loreto church: 1 hour

(should be combined with one of the other tours)

Loreto church is not just bells. We will see the birthplace of the Virgin Mary, an important pilgrimage site, a Rococo church with probably the largest concentration of little angels, a treasury with a diamond monstrance with more than 6,000 diamonds, a Lobkowicz crypt with a painting inspired by Rembrandt… and much more!
The tour lasts about an hour, I recommend combining it with a general tour of Castle District (Hradčany) and Little Quarter (Malá Strana) or to combine it with the approx. one-hour tour of the Strahov Library. The entrance fee is 280 CZK for an adult, discounts are available for children, students and seniors.
