PRAGUE TOURS FOR KIDS
LEGENDS AND GHOST STORIES
GAMES AND QUIZES
REPLICA OF MEDIEVAL COIN FOR THE WINNERS
The tours are prepared for children from about 5 years old to about 12 years old. All tours are planned for 2 hours, because from experience the children “can make it”. During the tour, I focus a lot on legends, rumors and ghosts, and the trick to keep the children moving and attentive are various games and competitions.
The routes cover all the basic sights in the center of Prague and a little more. I recommend starting with the Old Town, Prague Castle or Vyšehrad, but that’s just a recommendation, choose according to your taste!
Reccommended for first time visitors:
Old Town and Charles Bridge tour for kids:
Route: Powder Gate and Municipal House – Celetná street – St. James Church – Ungelt – Old Town Square and Astronomical clock – Klementinum – Charles Bridge. You can start the tour anywhere near the Old Town (Náměstí Republiky, Staroměstská, Národní třída, Můstek…).
A selection of ghosts: a headless drunkard knight, a bell-ringing nun, a begging skeleton or a chopped-off thief’s hand that still hangs in the church today. And many more, there really are a lot of ghosts in the Old Town!
In my opinion, this is the basic tour, use it as a tasting, if you like the style. I also prepared it as the very first tour for children.
Prague Castle for kids
Everyone knows the Prague Castle and even children should go through it, but it doesn’t have to be boring at all! I have prepared games and competitions so that nobody’s feet hurt. The Castle is not very haunted, but there are still some rumours, ghosts and legends
Route: Lions Court – Riding Hall, or in the summer the Royal Garden – an almost secret place with a wonderful echo – Matthias Gate and the first courtyard – the Cathedral of St. Vitus and the third courtyard – the Royal Palace – the square and the Basilica of St. George – Rosenberg palác.
The above mentioned tour is basic without the need to buy the ticket. It takes 2 hours and it´s perfectly enough to see the Prague Castle and its interesting corners and understand its history.
Then there is a second option: tour to the interiours – it includes St. Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St. George Basilica and Golden Lane. It takes 3 hours and in my opinion it might be a bit too much for younger kids.
Admission fees are 450 CZK per adult or 300 CZK per child / student or 900 CZK per family).
Reccommended for experienced visitors or families living in Prague long term:
If you´re lucky enough to stay longer or more often in our beautiful city, these tour will let you and your kids know it from inside out. The best ones to start with are the Old Town, Prague Castle or Vyšehrad, but the order is definitely up to you!
The treasures of Vyšehrad tour
for kids
Route: Táborská gate- St. Martin´s rotunda – Devil’s pilar – ramparts and views – church of St. Peter and Paul – the cemetery with Slavín – and other ramparts and views. After our tour, you can go to the underground casemates – there are regular tours with their guides.
A selection of ghosts: the devil who brought the stone pilar from Rome, the white lady who drops roses, the bone dance in the rotunda or the hearse. And, of course, the best known legends from the dawn of Czechia and Prague: Kazi, Teta, Libuše, Krok, Horymír, Šemík, Bivoj, Ctirad and Šárka…
Vyšehrad is one of the quieter and more relaxing routes, crowds of tourists and large groups have not yet discovered it.
Across the Charles Bridge to Kampa Island with kids
Route: Křižovnické square – Charles Bridge – Church of Our Lady under the Chain – Lennon’s Wall – Kampa – Sovovy Mills with Giant Babies.
A selection of ghosts: the Turk, the sneezing baby´s ghost (really, I’m not kidding!) and of course the “vodník” – “waterman” from Čertovka.
Charles Bridge is one of the places that cannot be missed in Prague. This tour a lot about timing: it can be a pleasant walk or a nightmare about getting trampled in a crowd. That’s why I strongly recommend starting the tour as early as possible, 9 am is perfectly fine, 10 – 10:30 is borderline. I always start the tour with the Charles Bridge and combine it with Kampa, where it is quiet at any time.
Little Quarter (Malá Strana) for kids
Route: Klárov (Metro Malostranská) – Valdštejnská Garden, or in winter and in case of closure of Valdštejnská Garden we will see Vojanovy Sady and Herget’s Brickyard – Pětikostelní náměstí – Malostranské náměstí – Church of Our Lady of Victory and the Infant Jesus of Prague.
A selection of ghosts: Headless Trumpeter, Headless Monk, Headless Swedish Soldier and Headless Actress. So watch out, you can simply lose your head on Malá Strana!
If you’re looking for a quieter location without tourists, you’ve come to the right place in Malá Strana.
Jewish Town tour for kids aka Golem tour
Route: Rudolfinum – Old Jewish Cemetery – Ceremonial Hall and Klaus Synagogue – Old-New Synagogue and Jewish Town Hall – Pařížská Street – Spanish Synagogue – Kozí Street and Kozí Plácek. The Jewish Museum exhibitions are located in the listed buildings, which we will not visit. If you are interested in a tour of the Jewish Museum, the details are here.
A selection of legends: Hana turned into a black cat, several mysterious ways to wealth and of course the Golem.
My tip: it’s quietest here on Saturdays, when the Jews celebrate Shabbath and the museum is closed.
Hradčany and the gold of the alchemists
Route: Strahov Monastery – lookout point under the monastery – Loretánské náměstí – Nový Svět – Hradčanské náměstí – Nerudova – Jánský vršek. And why alchemists? We are going to see the courtyard of the house where Master Kelly is said to have lived.
A selection of ghosts: a noblewoman in flaming bread shoes and a very real mummified mother superior.
This is the most peaceful location, I recommend it for a leisurely stroll through little-known places.
